Statement on Earthquake

Dear Friends,

Puerto Rico, as you know, was hard hit by a 6.4 earthquake and continues to experience multiple aftershocks on a daily basis that have devastated the southwestern part of the Island. These quakes have caused major infrastructure damage to homes, schools, hospitals and roads, and havoc in the lives of tens of thousands of Puerto Rican’s living in the six towns at the epicenter of the quake. Many have been forced to flee their homes. Families are living in temporary shelters and many more have set up tents in parks, open land or living in their cars afraid to be indoors. The emotional toll is immeasurable as people seek a safe haven from the uncertainty of more quakes and loss of their homes and way of life.

Puerto Rico has yet to fully recover from Hurricane Maria. An already vulnerable electrical and water grid, poor roads and compromised housing and building stock that lack structural integrity are now subject to daily aftershocks making recovery a slow and challenging undertaking.

The Foundation has established an Emergency Relief Fund and every dollar raised will go directly to address the needs of women and their families. We have already committed $10,000. Please support our efforts. Make a donation to our Emergency Relief Fund. Send your checks to Puerto Rico Women’s Foundation, 1863 Ave Fernandez Juncos, Apt 205, San Juan, PR 00909. You can also make a credit card donation through our website.

The Foundation partnered with the Coordinator De La Paz Para Mujeres / Puerto Rican Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault and their member agencies to assess the needs on the ground. In response, we have already issued a Request for Proposal, an expedited process to get funding to women’s groups who are already working in the impacted communities and need resources. We are committed to getting the money to organizations in a matter of days. With the input of the women’s organizations, we have identified three funding priorities that respond to the immediate needs of the women and their families now who are suffering the effects of the quakes.

Our funding priorities are:

● Women’s organizations that are providing direct services to women who have suffered structural damages to their facilities as a consequence of the earthquakes and aftershocks;

● Women’s organization that offer emotional well being support;

● Support to the caravan of women organized by the Puerto Rico Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault to provide support to impacted communities, shelters and camps.
