Sara is a feminist, sociologist, and social sciences professor. She is a Retired Professor from the Social Sciences Department at the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao. During her time there, she held various academic leadership positions, including Dean of Academic Affairs.
Together with Professor Idalia Ramos, she founded the first program to prevent violence against women at UPR-Humacao and the “Flagship” project, funded by OVW grants, to develop programs to prevent violence against women across all UPR campuses. She directed this project from 2000 to 2008.
From April 2008 to January 2009, she served as Deputy Women’s Advocate of Puerto Rico. She also worked directly on developing the Agenda Mujeres 2015 for Puerto Rico. She was a Facilitator of the Coordinating Committee of Coordinadora Paz para las Mujeres, a member of the board for Casa Julia and Casa de la Bondad shelters, and Proyecto Matria. From February 2013 to January 2017, she directed the Office for the Integral Development of Women in San Juan and the Department of Community Social Development in the same municipality. She is currently a member and spokesperson for the Movimiento Amplio de Mujeres de Puerto Rico.
She has participated in numerous feminist gatherings in Puerto Rico and internationally. She has delivered lectures, facilitated workshops, and written articles on topics such as gender, women in science, violence against women, dialogue and civic competencies, participatory research, and social action research.
She holds a master’s degree in Social Planning from UPR and has completed all coursework toward a doctorate in Sociology from the State University of New York at Albany (SUNY-Albany).
